Back to the Basics

One of the things we had to do before we got too deep into any projects was review the basics and also new tools we were not familiar with. This included the Patch Tool, the Clone and Stamp Tools, the Healing Brush, and Content Aware Fill. Once we reviewed these thing we practiced applying them with little photos and a collage.

What Did I Do?

I completed each practice image with the help of the tutorial and familiarized myself with the tool in question. Some were very similar. Content Aware Fill would use an algorithm to determine what should logically be in the gap selected. This is handy when you need to clean up something in an image like a wall backdrop with lots of dirty spots.
Cloning was manual for situations that the computer could not determine what looks right (which is often). Cloning is essentially as the name suggests, where you select a model area and stamp it into other places.
The Patch Tool would make the selected area look more like wherever you drag it to without straight up copying it. This is helpful for smoothing out wrinkles or adjusting how rough or soft something looks.
Last but not least, the Spot Healing Brush would act similarly to Content Aware Fill and can remove small spots. It is handy for removing mud specks or certain dirty surfaces. It is particularly helpful when there is a lot of things to remove and Content Aware Fill is not cutting it.

How Did I Apply Them?

It all really depends of the situation. Content Aware Fill is good for large areas where you have sample textures/colors readily available. The Spot Healing Brush is better for lots of tiny high maintenance things needed to be removed. Cloning works well with good sample areas as well and looks more natural when used right. Lastly the Patch Tool helps clean things up and take care of tiny problems the others can not.
All of these can be used in many situations for many reasons, and often in conjunction with each other. Some fixes may only require one, some may need all of them. It all depends on the image and how much of a perfectionist you are.

I hope this was helpful or interesting and you feel more informed, knowledgable, or even entertained. Have a wonderful day!
